Empyrean's Summer '25 Fiction Writing Contest
We’re excited to announce that Empyrean's Summer '25 Fiction Writing Contest is now open for entries.
All of Empyrean's contests are run in partnership with Kada's Bookstore, and is for English-language writers who are currently residing in the United States.
The theme for this issue is Fate & Destiny.
In the intricate tapestry of human existence, the threads of fate and destiny weave profound narratives that explore our roles as architects of our lives versus mere passengers in the cosmic flow. This theme invites writers to delve into the philosophical underpinnings of choice, inevitability, and the sometimes preordained paths we tread. Through the lens of fate and destiny, we ponder questions such as: Are we governed by the stars, or do we carve our own trajectories through sheer will? This exploration opens a door to stories that reflect on the interplay of personal dreams against the backdrop of larger forces—be they mystical, divine, or societal—shaping our journeys through the world.
Writers are encouraged to engage with this theme in diverse and imaginative ways. Potential submissions could include character-driven narratives where an individual's choices collide with a fate they cannot escape, magical realism that demonstrates how fate reveals itself in the mundane, or a poetry collection reflecting the pull of destiny.
The Fiction Contest accepts entries of stories (1500 – 8000 words) from all genres except children's.
We look forward to reading your submissions.
