Acts of kindness don’t live here anymore
They packed their bags- and yours, when clouds rolled over the door Respect departed too She just didn’t feel she could take any more Condescension was only too happy to take their place They kept a messy home anyways Admiration tried to hold out knowing our strengths more than we could tout Hostility took over the lease And filed in Huffing at the sight These bright walls Growing grime Shades drawn Days mimed Disdain followed shortly after Unbothered though to find A note from empathy fallen on the floor Saying, ‘hey, I bet it’s been a hard day Allow me to call on you. Tell me more.’ Everyone always loved empathy She never seemed out of place Wherever she went Light cleared up the space After her arrival Fondness came gingerly to the door Acts of kindness looked over her shoulder Carrying plates of fare you adore Respect came humbly back then too, Wishing she’d stayed the whole time Hoping it doesn’t feel too late for you |
NATALIE DEVANEY won 1st Place of the Poetry Writing Contest. She is a poet and musician from Homer, Alaska. She currently resides in her RV, traveling the US while raising her children. Inspiration has come from authors and creatives her whole life, as learning and enjoying books, poetry and music is a never ending journey of joy for her. Natalie's work tends to come from moments in life where emotions are too much to be contained and bubble out in some sort of prose or another, whether they be happy, contemplative, yearning, or painful and tender. Her work debuted in Empyrean Magazine in both print and online and can be found in Issue 4.
