The Truth About Selfishness

Issue 15
Our genes are selfish, science says,
they're always wanting their own way.
But selfishness is bad, we're taught.
A gaping divide one could say.

Should you always self-sacrifice?
Let other people's needs usurp.
Keep taking bullets for someone
who moans your blood messes up their shirt.

Or should you act from pure self-love
to ensure ‘me’ is self-preserved?
Just take, take, take all that you can.
Go grab your prize like it's deserved.

In truth selfishness is best shared.
Give that prize to those you cherish.
Share the joy it brings with the world.
Go on, be absolutely selfish!

MICHAEL EYRE writes poems. A number of his pieces have been published in literary magazines or been highly commended in poetry competitions. He is a graduate of Liverpool University and the University of Central Lancashire.
