In Search of Eggs

If you still have chickens,
collect two eggs.

If your chickens have died,
been mauled, or have abandoned you,

then leave your land
and walk amongst the marshes.

You might find a grebe
who’ll lead you to a nest.

She might say: Please,
take them, they’re no longer mine.

Or she might say nothing
but stare into your grief.

Or you might find nothing
but a lack of eggs.
